President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recognized the exemplary soldiers of the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) of the Philippine Army (PA) at Camp Brigadier General Gonzalo H. Siongco in Barangay Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.
1st Lieutenant Johnrel Uy and Sergeant Randy Micabalo received the Distinguished Conduct Star Award while the Gold Cross Medals were awarded to 1st Lieutenant Ren Mark Maladrigo, Staff Sergeant Henry Suay Jr. and Corporal Marvin Taras.
In his message, the Commander-in-Chief highlighted the Philippine Army’s indispensable role in preserving peace and preparing for the upcoming Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections, underscoring the importance of the military’s dual role as both warfighters and peacemakers.
The President also recognized the sacrifices and steadfast efforts of the troops in combating violent extremism and contributing to the successes of the peace process in Mindanao.
“To this day, you continue to show the true essence of service and of selflessness. For that, a nation of more than a hundred million provides to you a very, very heartfelt gratitude and a snappy salute,” he said.
The President lauded the collaborative efforts of the Western Mindanao Command, the Joint Task Force Central and the 6th ID in engaging with stakeholders such as the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and other groups inclined towards peace which have helped foster an atmosphere conducive to prosperity in the Bangsamoro Region.
With a visit to the military hospital prior to addressing the 6ID troops, he acknowledged the ongoing risks and challenges faced by the soldiers, reaffirming their necessity as skilled warfighters even as their role evolves towards peacekeeping.
Looking ahead, President Marcos Jr. emphasized the significance of the first BARMM parliamentary elections slated for May 2025, marking a pivotal step towards autonomy and lasting peace in the Region. He expressed his confidence in the military’s capabilities to ensure a safe and fair electoral process, laying the foundation for a ‘Bagong Pilipinas.’
