President Rodrigo Roa Duterte lauded the San Buenaventura Power Ltd. Co. (SBPL) for taking the step in the country’s collective journey towards energy security as he led the switch-on celebration of the SBPL’s 500-megawatt (MW) Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Plant at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.
“I am pleased that the 500 megawatts of power that this power plant will supply to the Luzon grid will be the product of the state-of-the-art ‘supercritical technology’ that will ensure increased efficiency while minimizing toxic emissions that can harm the environment,” President Duterte said.
The said power facility in Mauban, Quezon Province is the first coal plant in the country to utilize the supercritical high efficiency, low emissions (HELE) technology that is proven to improve the operational efficiency and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants. This technology enables the power facility to set the bar high as the most efficient and most energy-friendly coal-fired power plant in the Philippines.
“Let the success of this facility serve as a testament to the vast potential of the private sector to contribute to the [government’s efforts] in addressing deficiencies in energy generation and distribution across the country,” the Chief Executive added.
The coal-fired power plant is projected to provide baseload power capacity to meet the increasing power demand in the Luzon region. To ensure that the company complies to all the conditions under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-issued Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), the SBPL established a Multipartite Monitoring Team (MMT). This team is composed of representatives from the DENR, Department of Energy (DOE), the provincial government of Quezon, the local government of Mauban, host communities, and non-government organizations (NGOs).
“Again, let me thank you for increasing the capacity of our energy sector to meet the growing electricity demand in Luzon. With your help, I am confident that we can chart a better future for the power industry as we march towards a more sustainable and progressive future,” President Duterte said.
The SBPL is a joint venture between the Meralco PowerGen Corporation and Thailand’s Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO) Group.
