“The Philippines stood by Timor-Leste through the support of our peacekeeping forces and Filipinos in Timor-Leste during these difficult times,” declared President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in his toast remarks as he hosted a state banquet in honor of President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañan Palace.

In his remarks, President Marcos Jr. acknowledged the two-decade diplomatic ties with Timor-Leste. “Timor-Leste may be the youngest independent nation in Southeast Asia, but the Philippines-Timor-Leste relationship has gone a long way,” he stated.

He also emphasized that their shared historical and cultural affinities allow them to work together toward mutual progress for their nations and peoples, reaffirming the Philippines’ commitment to support Timor-Leste’s nation-building and development. These include capacity-building activities within the context of South-South Cooperation (SSC).

Furthermore, he assured the Timorese President that the Philippines remains committed in supporting Timor-Leste’s full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), promoting its status as the 11th member.

President Marcos Jr. also conveyed his optimism for the two counties’ continued cooperation, both bilaterally and regionally, in realizing their mutual desire to achieve peace and prosperity.

“On behalf of our government and the Filipino people, I thank you, Mr. President, for undertaking this state visit. I know that the Philippines and the Filipino people are close to your heart, having visited here many times in the past,” he expressed.

Raising his glass for a toast in honor of the Timorese President, the Chief Executive conveyed his good wishes for the prosperity of Timor-Leste, strengthened friendship between the two countries, and the continued good health of President Jośe Ramos-Horta.

In response, President Ramos-Horta emphasized the two countries’ shared vision for a brighter, more prosperous future, and a partnership grounded in mutual respect, trust and the desire to work together for the betterment of their peoples. He also mentioned a wide range of key issues discussed in the bilateral meeting, such as climate change, energy, trade and investments, among others. He likewise expressed his admiration for the Philippines’ remarkable progress in various fields.

The Timorese President conveyed his gratitude for the unwavering support of the Philippines to Timor-Leste, noting the Philippines’ provision of assistance in crucial areas for their country. “This continuous support fosters a spirit of solidarity and friendship between our two nations,” he added.

He also urged their governments, business communities and civil societies to seize the opportunities that lie ahead. “Together, we can unlock the full potential of our nations and create a brighter future for both peoples,” President Ramos-Horta concluded.
