President Benigno S. Aquino III was welcomed in a state banquet prepared in his honor by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on the second day of his State Visit to Japan.

During the occasion, the President shared a toast with Emperor Akihito and expressed his gratitude for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He said that although this was his first and only meeting with their Majesties, the memories of this trip will stay with him for many years.

Furthermore, he added that Japan had a history of conflict before the pain and tragedy of the past finally healed, saying that “for 59 years, our two nations have demonstrated that we can work together for our advancement and mutual benefit.”

President Aquino also emphasized that he is proud of the friendship that the country has with Japan.

“Tonight, I am here in Tokyo as the leader of the Filipino nation, proud friends and partners of the Japanese people — the representative of a nation that has rediscovered its optimism and confidence,” the President stated.
