“We have to watch this carefully, because we’re just beginning, this is just the start of the rainfall… So we guess, we’re alright for now but mukhang inevitable na mag-ooverflow or magri-release tayo ng tubig. Maybe what we can do is do a measured response, kahit hindi pa high-water level, magbitaw na tayo nang kaunti. Pababain na natin na hindi apektado yung mga downstream communities,” said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. when he led a situation briefing to assess the effects of Tropical Storm Kristine at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Headquarters in Camp Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

During the briefing, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) presented initial updates on the massive and unprecedented flooding that occurred in Region V (Bicol Region) and other regions, emphasizing that the status of lifelines and damages to agriculture and livelihood assets are among the important matters that need to be monitored closely.

In terms of immediate response, the OCD reported that the need for rubber boats and water search-and-rescue equipment were identified early on, highlighting the necessity for logistics to transport and evacuate people who are in harm’s way.

Other concerned agencies also discussed their comprehensive actions in response to the Tropical Storm’s passage into the country, ensuring that no Filipino would be left behind and that everyone would receive prompt assistance.

In light of the impending threat posed by Tropical Storm Kristine, the Chief Executive directed all involved agencies to preposition necessary assistance and emergency supplies, reiterating that the national government should work diligently to ensure comprehensive preparedness by mapping out all areas likely to be affected.

This proactive measure is aimed at enhancing the readiness and effectiveness of the government’s response efforts, ensuring that resources are readily available when needed most.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Storm Kristine is expected to further intensify into a severe tropical storm before making landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora later this evening or early tomorrow morning, 24 October 2024.

It is also projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday, 25 October 2024.
