President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads a discussion on revitalizing the critical minerals industry in the Philippines during a sectoral meeting at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañan Palace on June 4, 2024.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), despite abundant mineral deposits, the Philippines struggles to fully harness its mining sector’s potential, which is seen as crucial for economic growth and social development.
The government is taking steps to boost mineral production by spearheading exploration initiatives, making high-potential areas available to the public, and enhancing infrastructure and utility support for seamless operations.
The DENR presents a roadmap highlighting potential areas for nickel, copper and gold exploration, spanning regions like Cordillera, Surigao and Davao.
Amidst opportunities, challenges have emerged as constructive dialogue highlights the need for reforms in organizational procedures, such as streamlining the permitting process and promoting responsible mining practices.
Furthermore, addressing political and legal obstacles to ensure a favorable mining environment has become a priority.
The DENR stresses policy coherence, emphasizing the integration of inclusive growth agendas, green job creation and ecological balance, alongside recognizing geopolitical strategies in navigating global mineral trade.
