President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. presided over a sectoral meeting on flood management program by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) at the State Dining Room in Malacañan Palace.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan discussed the various strategic infrastructure programs and other initiatives aimed at mitigating flooding in the country that are aligned with the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028.
These include the Metro Manila Flood Management Program, Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project, Leyte Tide Embankment Project, Flood Risk Management Project in Cagayan de Oro River, Central Luzon-Pampanga River Floodway Flood Control Project, Davao City Flood Control and Drainage Project, and Ambal-Simuay River and Rio Grande de Mindanao River Flood Control and Riverbank Protection, among others.
Secretary Bonoan also presented the ‘Kalsada Tungo sa Patubigan’ (KATUBIGAN), a DPWH convergence program with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) that aims to implement Small Water Impounding Projects (SWIP), Small River Impounding Projects (SRIP) and service road infrastructure projects in support of the Administration’s priority agenda on food security.
During the sectoral meeting, the attendees also discussed updates on the implementation of the Rainwater Collector System (RWCS) Program. Secretary Bonoan reported that the program had constructed an additional 6,002 RWCS from July 2022 to May 2023, bringing the total number to 23,201 across the country. This program is in compliance with Republic Act No. 6716 which aims to provide the construction of water wells, rainwater collectors, development of springs and rehabilitation of existing water wells in all barangays throughout the Philippines.
