November 28, 2023
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. discussed strategies for ensuring a sustainable energy supply during a sectoral meeting at the State Dining Room in Malacañan Palace.
Reporting via virtual conference, Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael Lotilla presented the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) 2023-2050. He explained that the plan aims to achieve 10% energy savings on oil products and electricity from 2040 to 2050; 35% power generation mix by 2030, 50% by 2040 and more than 50% by 2050; a 50% electric vehicle penetration rate in road transport by 2040; and the exploration of alternative technologies (e.g. nuclear, hydrogen, ammonia). The plan also includes the adoption of advanced and smart grid technologies and the development of resilient and climate-proof energy infrastructure.
He proposed that concerned agencies should develop programs to upskill the Filipino workforce in alignment with internationally accredited standards. He also suggested the issuance of an Executive Order (EO) to accelerate energy efficiency and conservation during the El Niño months, and a comprehensive review of taxation on the energy sector, among others.
