Villamor Air Base, Pasay City
January 23, 2020
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte met with the family of Mr. Roderick Aguinaldo — a detained overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Bahrain — and posed for a photo opportunity with them at the Villamor Air Base (VAB) in Pasay City.
Aguinaldo has been in detention for three (3) years after killing a Pakistani national in Bahrain. With the help of President Duterte and former Special Assistant to the President (SAP) and now Senator Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go, the Bahraini government reduced the death penalty sentence to life imprisonment.
Aguinaldo’s wife, parents and two (2) daughters were given an opportunity to have a compassionate visit and will be flying to Bahrain on January 25, 2020. Roderick’s three (3) children also received scholarship and financial assistance from the Philippine government.
Special Envoy to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ambassador Amable Aguiluz V, Chief of Presidential Protocol and Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Robert Borje, and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Arriola joined President Duterte and Senator Go in the event.
