Following his State Visit to Brunei Darussalam, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. embarks on a Working Visit to Singapore to deliver a keynote address at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, marking the opening of the 21st edition of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue on May 31, 2024.
This is the first time that a Philippine President has been invited to deliver a keynote address at the annual intergovernmental security forum, which is attended by defense and military officials, security experts and business leaders to discuss critical security challenges around the globe.
During this two-day Working Visit, the President is also set to hold separate meetings with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong — who recently took over as the City-State’s fourth prime minister—and Singapore’s former Prime Minister and now Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Additionally, he will hold a bilateral meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytè.
The IISS Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD), also known as Asia’s premier defense summit, has served as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation and building trust among regional and global stakeholders on strategic security issues since it began in 2002. Previous keynote speakers have included Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
President Marcos Jr.’s Working Visit to Singapore also coincides with the 55th anniversary of Philippines-Singapore diplomatic relations formally established on May 16, 1969.
