Participation of President Benigno S. Aquino III
to the 27th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
20-22 November 2015
A day after successfully hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in the Philippines, President Benigno S. Aquino III proceeds to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the 27th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits 2015.
One significant milestone for this year’s summit is the realization of the ASEAN Community as outlined in the ‘Roadmap for an ASEAN Community 2009-2015.” It aims to “achieve uniformity of rules and procedures and seamless physical, infrastructural and people-to-people connectivity” among all ten ASEAN Member States.
Apart from the regional bloc summit, the 10 ASEAN Heads of State/Government will also meet with their fellow leaders from China, India, Japan, South Korea, United States of America and United Nations.
Likewise, the 27th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits 2015 will see the signing of two documents, namely the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Establishment of the ASEAN Community, and the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
At present, ASEAN is the seventh largest economy in the world with a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$ 2.5 trillion.
The regional bloc was established on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. In the years that followed, its membership expanded to include Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
