Participation of President Benigno S. Aquino III
to the 26th ASEAN Summit
Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, Malaysia
April 26-28, 2015

President Benigno S. Aquino III is scheduled to participate in the 26th ASEAN Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, Malaysia from 26 – 28 April 2015.

In a press briefing in Malacañang, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs Luis Cruz says that President Aquino is expected to seek the support of the ASEAN leaders on the crafting of a binding Code of Conduct (COC) in the disputed waters following China’s recent reclamation activities in the West Philippine Sea.

Several summit meetings will be attended by President Aquino upon his arrival in Kuala Lumpur. He is expected to travel to Langkawi together with other ASEAN leaders on his third day in Malaysia to attend the ASEAN Summit Retreat, BIMP-EAGA Summit and the closing ceremony. Leaders will also be treated in a barbeque dinner.

With the theme “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision,” Malaysia puts forward a ‘people-centered ASEAN’ as it chairs this year’s 26th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Gearing to build a strong ASEAN Community, Malaysia has set eight priority actions: to formally establish the ASEAN Community, to develop the ASEAN Community’s Vision and its Attendant Documents, to steer ASEAN closer to the peoples, to strengthen the development of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to expand intra-ASEAN trade and investment through cross-border investments and trade, to strengthen ASEAN’s institutions, to promote regional peace and security through moderation and to enhance ASEAN’s role as a global player.

Malaysia took over the chairmanship from Myanmar last year. They will also host the 27th ASEAN Summit later this year on November 19-21, 2015.

Founded in August 1967, the ASEAN consists of 10 member-states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
