President Benigno S. Aquino III heads to Brunei Darussalam to participate in the 23rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits from 8-10 October 2013.

Under the theme “Our People, Our Future Together”, discussions will focus on the implementation of the ASEAN Charter and the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community beyond 2015 where the leaders have already agreed to “further intensify our work to realise an ASEAN Community that is politically cohesive, economically integrated and socially responsible in order to take advantage of current and future opportunities, and effectively respond to regional and international challenges.”

This is the last meeting for the year of the ten ASEAN Member states composed of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Aside from the Heads of State/Government of the regional bloc, separate meetings will be held with the Dialogue Partners from Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, India, New Zealand, Russian Federation, United States of America and the United Nations.

In the 22nd ASEAN Summit last 24-25 April 2013, President Aquino pushed for the stricter implementation of the principles in the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) for the peaceful resolution of territorial disputes, as well as for the early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC).
