Official Visit of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to
Moscow, Russian Federation
May 22-23, 2017
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte visits Moscow in the Russian Federation from May 22-23, 2017 upon the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The invite was extended when the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Lima, Peru last year.
Aside from President Duterte’s schedule to give a policy speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and meet the Filipino community, one of the highlights of the Chief Executive’s visit to Russia is his meeting with President Putin and for whom the Philippine leader has repeatedly expressed his admiration.
The visit of President Duterte to Russia is said to mark a new chapter in the Philippines-Russia bilateral relations. It is expected to send a strong message on the Philippines’ commitment to seek new partnerships and strengthen relations with nontraditional partners as the President vows to pursue an independent foreign policy.
Note: The official visit was cut short when news of government troops clashed with the Maute group in Marawi City and President Duterte declared Martial Law in Mindanao. He immediately flew back to Manila after meeting President Putin.
