President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed President Surangel Whipps Jr. of the Republic of Palau during an official luncheon at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañan Palace.

In his brief remarks, President Marcos Jr. expressed gratitude for the enduring friendship between the Philippines and Palau, commending President Whipps Jr. for his successful leadership and the recent electoral process that showcased the strength of Palau’s democracy.

“Our bilateral relations have the most potential to grow, as evident to the discussions of agreements that we forged this morning, these agreements form the building blocks of the new phase in our relations,” he said, specifically acknowledging the contribution of the 4,000 Filipinos residing and working in Palau. He thanked the Palauan government for its commitment to their welfare and recognizing their role in the nation’s development.

In his remarks, President Whipps Jr. underscored the geographical and cultural closeness between Palau and the Philippines, stating, “Manila is the closest foreign capital to Palau, so it’s fitting that, so soon after our inauguration, we’re here to visit our friends, part of our Pacific family.” He reflected on the productive discussions held earlier in the day, aiming to enhance the already strong relationships between the two nations.

Highlighting the significance of human resources, President Whipps Jr. expressed deep appreciation for the Filipinos living and working in Palau. “They are part of our development, part of our community, and they have helped us build a strong nation,” he stated, reiterating the vital role these individuals play in Palau’s growth.

The Palauan leader also discussed areas of collaboration, expressing eagerness to strengthen bonds in agriculture, healthcare and business opportunities, while encouraging increased Philippine investment in Palau.

Prior to the luncheon, the two leaders held a bilateral meeting, during which they presented key agreements: a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Fisheries Cooperation; an MOU on Policy Consultations; and an Exchange of Notes on Technical Cooperation.

This year marks the 28th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries which were established on July 15, 1997.
