President Rodrigo Roa Duterte administered the oath of office to Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin, Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando, and Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang, in simple ceremonies at the Heroes Hall in Malacañan Palace.

Chief Justice Bersamin is on his 9th year as associate justice and is the third most senior in the Supreme Court. He completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science at the University of the Philippines in Diliman in 1968, and earned his law degree at the University of the East. He placed 9th in the 1973 bar examinations. The new Supreme Court Chief Justice has been a member of the judiciary for more than 30 years.

Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando previously served in the Court of Appeals (CA) and assumed the vacancy left by retired Supreme Court Justice Samuel Martires who was appointed as Ombudsman. In the Court of Appeals, Associate Justice Hernando distinguished himself with the speedy disposition of cases that he vowed to continue if appointed to the Supreme Court.

Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang also served in the Court of Appeals (CA) for 15 years since 2003 prior to her appointment in the Supreme Court. She obtained her law degree from the University of the Philippines and placed 9th in the 1975 bar examinations. She was a trial court judge in Manila before moving to the Court of Appeals.
