President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. administered the oath of office to newly appointed Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ Angara in a simple ceremony at Malacañan Palace.
In a brief statement after the oath-taking ceremony, President Marcos Jr. expressed his confidence in Secretary Angara as he leads the DepEd and conveyed his optimism for the future of the country’s education system.
In response, Secretary Angara relayed his appreciation to the President for entrusting him to lead one of the most important sectors in the country. He stated his anticipation to work closely with the Administration in bringing about the needed reforms toward quality education, benefiting young learners and future generations.
Before his appointment in the Cabinet post, Secretary Angara is known for his extensive legislative history, having championed significant educational reforms since joining the Senate in 2013. These include the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K-12) and Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act, among others.
He completed his Master of Laws from Harvard University and holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
