June 3, 2018

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte met with the Filipino community at the Grand Hilton Convention Center in Seoul, South Korea on the first day of his three-day official visit in the ‘Land of the Morning Calm’.

In his speech, President Duterte conveyed to his ‘kababayans’ that everyone present in the event is a friend.  He relayed to them the efforts that the government is doing for the welfare of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) such as their living conditions, no harassments, entitlement to days off, and the right to cook their food.

The President revealed that he sacked some of his appointed officials who erred and abused their positions with unnecessary foreign travels.  He also discussed the austerity measures that his administration is implementing to reduce government spending, such as the use of a commercial flight going to South Korea.

Likewise, President Duterte reiterated the government’s campaign against corruption, illegal drugs, and alleviating the effects of illegal mining.

The Philippines and the Republic of Korea have been friends for 69 years, with bilateral ties continuing to flourish through the years.  South Korea is the 7th trading partner of the Philippines.
