President Benigno S. Aquino III led the launching of “Ligtas sa Tigdas at Polio,” a Mass Immunization Campaign spearheaded by the Department of Health (DOH) that aims to help lessen the growing cases of measles, as well as to make the Philippines a polio-free country.

The campaign intends to help the health department to achieve the Millenium Development Goal of reducing child mortality rate in the nation through free vaccines. The government plans to vaccinate an approximate 11 million children, aged between nine months old to five years old, against measles. Likewise, 13 million children would acquire free vaccination against polio.

In his brief remarks, President Aquino encouraged everyone to participate in the nationwide campaign on the prevention of these diseases. He called on every family, especially the parents, to guide and give ample care to their children in order to avoid the spread of polio and measles. Moreover, the President reassured the people of government’s support in improving health among Filipinos and tasked the health department to always be on heightened alert in monitoring the over-all well being of the nation.
