President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the launching and commissioning of the Philippine Red Cross’ (PRC) first humanitarian vessel known as the M/V PRC Amazing Grace at the Philippine Navy Headquarters in Manila.
In his speech, the President recalled his experience when typhoon Yolanda struck the country and how the City Government of Davao helped the people of Tacloban City. He mentioned that in times of natural disasters, the M/V PRC Amazing Grace is a refreshing sight that is ready to go when needed.
“Through this ship, the PRC would be able to complement government forces in providing immediate relief assistance during emergency and crisis situations. This ship shall also serve as a reminder of the will and determination of the PRC to face any obstacle in pursuit of its noble cause,” said the President.
He added, “May this ship serve as a concrete reminder to all of us that above all, we must prioritize the safety, the well-being, and the welfare of our people.”
Likewise, President Duterte urged PRC “to take a more active role in the efforts to maintain peace and order in our communities,” asking the public to contribute to the society in times of disasters and help the government by being vigilant against illegal drugs, crime, and corruption.
Founded in 1947, PRC provides quality life-saving services that protect the life and dignity, especially of indigent Filipinos, in vulnerable situations. The organization plans to use the ship as a rapid transport, landing vessel, and humanitarian logistics ship to deploy its emergency units in times of disaster.
