Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Medardo Macaraig discusses the significance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s upcoming Working Visit to Singapore, during which the Chief Executive is set to deliver a keynote address — the first ever to be made by a Philippine President — at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, marking the opening of the 21st Asia Security Summit on May 31, 2024.

According to Ambassador Macaraig, the President’s participation in this year’s Asia Security Summit came at the invitation of Singapore’s former Prime Minister and now Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He emphasizes the key role that the President will play in setting the tone for the three-day Security Summit and in presenting the country’s position on various critical issues and security challenges confronting the region and the globe.

President Marcos Jr.’s Working Visit to Singapore also serves as an opportune time for the Philippines and Singapore to deepen diplomatic relations under the leadership of Singapore’s new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who succeeded Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after his 20-year tenure.

Coinciding with this year’s Asia Security Summit, the Philippines and Singapore are celebrating the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
