Barangay Candanay Sur, Siquijor
June 11, 2025

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the inspection of the Siquijor Island Power Corporation (SIPCOR) Power Plant in Barangay Candanay Sur, Siquijor following the recent declaration of a state of calamity in the Province due to ongoing power shortages.

According to Provincial Administrator and concurrent Tourism Officer Atty. Dale Tudtud, the power crisis continues to disrupt essential services, affecting water supply systems, communication networks, access to healthcare and the operations of both government offices and private businesses, including a significant impact on the tourism sector.

He added that the declaration of a state of calamity on 5 June 2025 enables the Provincial Government to utilize its quick response fund for the procurement of power generators to help alleviate the situation.

In recent days, power outages across the Island have lasted up to eight (8) hours or more, with the Provincial Siquijor Electric Cooperative (PROSIELCO) citing generator breakdowns and scheduled maintenance as the primary causes.

The Department of Energy (DOE) reported that despite SIPCOR’s installed capacity of 11.580 megawatts (MW), only 8.816 MW is currently contracted to PROSIELCO. This contracted capacity falls short of Siquijor’s current power demand of 10.51 MW, contributing to recurring power interruptions and highlighting the gap between supply and demand across the Province.

As part of the government’s commitment to strengthening Siquijor’s power infrastructure, the National Electrification Administration (NEA), under the DOE, continues to assess and implement viable solutions to improve the performance of power-generating units. These efforts include the ratification of generator set purchases and other measures aimed at resolving the ongoing electricity challenges.

Prior to today’s inspection, President Marcos Jr. directed the DOE to take immediate action on these persistent power issues and ordered a thorough investigation into the operations of SIPCOR, the Island’s power distributor.

He urged concerned agencies to implement immediate solutions while developing a long-term energy strategy to ensure a stable power supply that supports sustained tourism growth and uninterrupted business operations in the Province of Siquijor.
