Basey, Samar

As the Administration continues to address recent mobility and transportation challenges brought by the restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inspected the ongoing expansion plans being implemented at the Amandayehan Port in Basey, Samar.
The visit comes less than a month after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced a three-ton weight limit on the San Juanico Bridge following assessments that the bridge is in critical condition. This affected various sectors in the Provinces of Leyte and Samar and halted the passage of heavy cargo vehicles, including the delivery of basic commodities in the Provinces.
The Amandayehan Airport is one of the ports in Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) identified as an alternative route due to its strategic location and proximity to Tacloban Port. According to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), it has already allocated a budget of PhP400 million from its Corporate Operating Budget to expand and modernize key ports in Samar that will serve as alternate transport routes going to the Province of Leyte.
As part of President Marcos Jr.’s directive to address mobility issues in the Eastern Visayas Region, this allocation will support the timely expansion efforts in the Amandayehan Port. This will enable the port to accommodate Roll On/Roll Off (RoRo) and Landing Craft Tank (LCT) vessels. Additionally, the PPA assures the installation of navigational buoys and the port’s physical expansion to ensure safer vessel passage and increased cargo-handling capacity.
