Calabanga, Camarines Sur
5 May 2016
President Benigno S. Aquino III unveiled the Calabanga Fishport and Cold Storage Facility in Barangay Sabang, Calabanga, Camarines Sur.
Joining him during the inspection and unveiling ceremony is Camarines Sur 3rd District Representative and Liberal Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo.
“Napakatagal na ito na panaginip ng mga mangingisda dito sa Calabanga dahil ito po ang main source of livelihood nila. Napakarami na pong mga pangulo na po ang dumaan, napakaraming politiko na ang dumaan, bawat eleksyon po pinapangako na magkakaroon ng fishport. Pero ngayon lang po sa inyong pamumuno naging totoo ang panaginip ng mga tao sa amin, ” said Robredo.
Construction of the fishport began in 2013 with PhP 50 million total funding sourced out under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), while the ice plant and storage facility began in 2014 with PhP 46 million total funding spearheaded by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA).
The fishport is seen to improve fishing and agricultural industries in all eight towns along the shorelines of San Miguel Bay. Meanwhile, the ice plant will offer fisherfolks of Calabanga with cheaper alternative from the usual household ice bag priced at PhP 3.00/750 gm to PhP 125/50 kg ice block, saving them PhP 75 per ice block.
With both the fishport and ice plant now fully operational, 1,304 fishermen and fish traders, as well as local residences of the eight towns in Calabanga will be directly benefitted by these infrastructures.
