President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the unveiling of the inaugural marker and ceremonial switch-on of the Filinvest Development Corporation (FDC) Misamis 3×135 MW Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) Coal Thermal Plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

In his message, the President recognized the invaluable contributions of the Filinvest Group and the Gotianun family members towards nation building and through developing enterprises that are targeted to improve the Filipinos’ standard of living.

Likewise, he expressed disdain towards the European Union (EU) for limiting the Philippines’ carbon emission.

“They want to lower but they also want us to go lower than usual. So, they would want to delimit and we cannot raise higher the ratio that we have been using — that we have been used to. If we want to industrialize our country because we were left behind by so many generations, we have to keep up with developments and the move right now is to use coal,” President Duterte said.

In a press statement, the FDC assured the public that the Coal Thermal Plant utilizes the latest “clean coal technology” in the market, removing more than 95% of sulfur emissions. They also claim that the technology creates negligible nitrogen oxide levels while generating useful by-products such as calcium sulfate used for cement production.

Since the synchronization phase began, two of the three units already went online adding 270 MW to the Mindanao grid. And with the last unit finally synchronized, the coal-powered thermal plant has reached its full capacity in ensuring 405 MW to end the recurring power crisis in Mindanao.

During the event, President Duterte unveiled a dedication marker for the late Andrew L. Gotianun, Sr., Founder of the Filinvest Group of Companies, whose brainchild and last project was the FDC Misamis Coal Thermal Plant. He passed away early this year on March 10, 2016 at the age of 88.
