“Kapit-bisig nating palakasin ang sektor ng agrikultura at tiyakin na may pagkain sa hapag ng bawat Pilipino,” remarked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. when he led the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lower Agno River Irrigation System (LARIS) Paitan Dam and the turnover of farm machineries and equipment (FMEs), farm inputs and Solar Powered Irrigation Projects (SPIPs) at the Municipality of Santa Maria in Pangasinan.
Last year’s severe El Niño significantly impacted several provinces, with Pangasinan among those that suffered major agricultural losses due to water shortages. Recognizing this, President Marcos Jr. highlighted the importance of long-term solutions that would shield farming communities from similar disasters.
One of these solutions was the construction of the Paitan Dam in Santa Maria that formed part of a broader irrigation system designed to harness and store rainwater during the wet season. This resource would be used during dry spells, ensuring a reliable water supply for farms regardless of the climate.
“Patunay ito na kung sama-sama tayong kikilos, kayang-kaya nating isulong ang makabagong teknolohiya na mapapakinabangan ng ating mga magsasaka,” the Chief Executive said.
Alongside the dam’s launch, the President also led the distribution of agricultural support that included hybrid seeds, fertilizers and farming equipment. These provisions were given in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), further enhancing the capacity of farmers and agrarian reform beneficiaries to meet growing food demands.
Transitioning to sustainable methods, the Administration also turned over solar powered irrigation pumps. These modern technologies not only reduced energy costs but also promoted eco-friendly farming practices, contributing to long-term environmental goals.
Since assuming office, the Chief Executive has prioritized food security and agricultural development, ensuring farmers have access to necessary tools, technologies and infrastructure. The continued rollout of these support mechanisms affirmed the Administration’s vision of a modernized, resilient farming sector aligned with the principles of a ‘Bagong Pilipinas.’
“Ating patunayan na taglay natin ang diwa ng Bagong Pilipino — na may disiplina, may husay, at may pagmamahal sa bayan. Maraming salamat po at mabuhay ang ating mga magsasaka,” President Marcos Jr. concluded in his speech.
