President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. received His Excellency William John Carlos, outgoing Ambassador of Ireland to the Philippines, in a farewell call at the Study Room in Malacañan Palace.

Ambassador Carlos is Ireland’s first-ever resident envoy to the Philippines, starting his diplomatic mission to the country upon the establishment of the inaugural Irish Embassy in Manila in 2021.

During their meeting, the Irish Ambassador expressed his utmost gratitude to President Marcos Jr. for extending gracious hospitality throughout his stay in the Philippines, noting that it will be hard for him to leave given the warm welcome of Filipinos and the country’s rich culture.

In response, the President conveyed his appreciation towards Ambassador Carlos for his positive views of the Philippines during his diplomatic duty in the country.

Since the establishment of the two nations’ diplomatic ties in 1984, Philippines-Ireland relations continue to flourish for the past four (4) decades. Both countries have worked on various areas of mutual cooperation such as trade and investments, economic partnership and people-to-people exchange, among others.

According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Ireland was the Philippines’ 27th trading partner, the 31st export market and the 28th import source last year. In 2018, trade between the two countries peaked at US$650 million.
