President Benigno S. Aquino III led the ceremonial distribution of relief goods for families who sought shelter at the Mandaluyong Elementary School when floodwaters brought by the heavy rains spawned by Tropical cyclone Maring and a southwest monsoon reached their homes in Barangay Poblacion. The President was joined by Rep. Neptali Gonzales II, Mayor Benhur Abalos, and Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon ‘Dinky’ Soliman in distributing the goods worth about P470 each.
Each relief pack contained the following: one plastic mat, one blanket, five cans of sardines, five cans of corned beef, two kilos of rice, and five sachets of coffee. The World Food Programme has also provided six packs of high-energy biscuits while the Philippine Red Cross (Rizal Chapter) gave used clothing.
In his short message, President Aquino thanked those who agreed to be evacuated from the danger zones they were in and should inform the authorities if they still have needs that should be addressed.
“Makipagtulungan po sa atin nang lalong mapabilis ‘yung paglikas at sa mas maayos na kondisyon… Kilos na muna imbes na salita,” the President urged the settlers.
The Mandaluyong Elementary School is one of the three locations made into an evacuation center in the city and about 307 families or 1,631 individuals have been temporary living there since Sunday (August 18).
