President Benigno S. Aquino III received the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council led by Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu in a courtesy call held in Malacañang.
Established in 1944, ICAO is a United Nations specialized agency created for the management of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention. The organization also works with the 191 Member States of the Convention and industry groups to discuss and agree on international civil aviation Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), as well as to create policies in securing a safe and economically sustainable civil aviation sector.
The Council, on the other hand, is a permanent body of the organization. Among its major duties is to implement SARPs and include them as Annexes to the Chicago Convention. It may also mediate between Member States about aviation matters and the adoption of the convention’s provisions, and may generally take measures in maintaining the safety and regularity of international air transport.
Also present during the courtesy call were ICAO Asia and Pacific Office Regional Director Arun Mishra, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director-General William Hotchkiss III.
