President Rodrigo Roa Duterte received Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Shinichi Kitaoka in a courtesy call at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo during his official visit to Japan.

In October 2016, President Duterte and Mr. Kitaoka held talks in Tokyo to discuss future cooperation plans in various sectors, including maritime assistance, building high-quality infrastructure projects, and peace in Mindanao.

In a press release posted on the JICA website during the said meeting, an overseas development assistance (ODA) loan of up to 16.455 billion yen was allotted for the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project for the Philippine Coast Guard (Phase II).
