President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. received Dr. Ngozi Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), in a courtesy call at the Study Room in Malacañan Palace.

During their meeting, the President discussed the country’s plans to enhance trade and commerce with partners. Rising from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, he emphasized that trade has become more significant.

The WTO Director General is in the Philippines to meet with the Secretaries of the Department of Finance (DOF), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Department of Agriculture (DA). She commended the country for its strong economic performance despite global challenges.

The WTO deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. The Philippines has been a member of the WTO since 1 January 1995.
