President Rodrigo Roa Duterte vowed to upgrade the capability of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) during its 28th Founding Anniversary and 118th Year of Fire Service in a ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

“I assure you that this administration will continue to pursue programs and other initiatives that will enhance your professional and operational capabilities,” President Duterte said in his message.

“We acknowledge the men and women of the BFP for your valuable contribution in saving lives and properties, in preventing and suppressing destructive fires, and quickly responding to both man made and natural disasters all over our country,” he added.

The President also noted that 80% of the 1,500 municipalities nationwide are equipped with fire stations, and fire incidents reported in 2016 has gone down from 19,000 to 16,000 in 2018.

Carrying the theme, ‘Journey Towards Transparent and Effective Public Service’, the event highlighted the BFP’s participation in the ‘whole-of-government’ approach in capability building and anti-corruption practices by conferring awards to top performing BFP units, government officials and other personalities.

Among those recognized in the program was Senator Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go for his proposed bill that aims to modernize the country’s Bureau of Fire Protection.
