Phnom Penh, Cambodia
20 November 2012
The ten ASEAN leaders including President Benigno S. Aquino III participated in the first ever ASEAN Global Dialogue at Peace Palace in Phnom Penh to discuss the role of multilateral institutions, ASEAN and East Asia in addressing issues particularly economic and financial challenges.
The speakers included International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, Asian Development Bank President Haruhiko Kuroda, World Trade Organization Director General Pascal Lamy, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, and World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
The ASEAN Global Dialogue is Cambodia’s initiative as ASEAN Chair for 2012. Its purpose is to promote ASEAN as a serious high-level platform for dialogue on global issues by attracting the attention of international multilateral institutions and UN organisations to support the “ASEAN’s Phnom Penh Agenda” as adopted by ASEAN leaders at the 20th Summit in April 2012.
