President Rodrigo Roa Duterte arrived at the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort for his participation to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Gathering in Bali, Indonesia.
In a pre-departure briefing by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila last October 8, the ASEAN-United Nations (UN) cooperation was emphasized at the sidelines of the recently concluded 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly, particularly the two bodies’ partnership in cross-sectorial areas that contribute to the implementation of the ASEAN Vision 2025 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These areas include actions on minimizing the adverse impact of climate change, alleviating poverty and inequalities, promoting women’s empowerment, improving energy connectivity, and developing new technical solutions for energy efficiency, education, labor and employment, health, among others.
Relative to the ASEAN Leaders’ Gathering, Heads of State/Government from the ten member countries have an opportunity to engage with UN Secretary General António Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde, World Bank (WB) President Jim Yong Kim, and ASEAN Secretary General Dato Lim Jock Hoi, as well as exchange ideas on achieving their common goals.
The outcome of the discussions in the gathering is expected to set the tone for the 2018 IMF-WB Annual Meetings also taking place in Bali, Indonesia this October.
