President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. conducted an aerial inspection of areas affected by the recent floodings and landslides brought about by the shear line and trough or extension of a low-pressure area (LPA) in the Davao Region shortly upon arriving in Davao City for a series of events on February 7, 2024.
Before ending his visit, the President led a situation briefing where he was given the latest summary reports on the affected areas by the local leaders and officials from the Provinces of Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental and Davao City.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian announced that President Marcos Jr. issued a directive on the immediate release of assistance totaling PhP265 million from the Office of the President to the following provinces and cities: Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Agusan del Sur, Davao de Oro, Surigao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Davao City, Butuan City, Davao Occidental, Cotabato, Agusan del Norte and Bukidnon.
In his guidance, the Chief Executive emphasized the importance of climate and disaster risk assessment in each province through close coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), strengthening and/or modifying infrastructure to withstand the impact of climate change, provision of potable water and non-food items to the victims and evacuees, prioritization of rebuilding damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges and thoroughfares, amongst other directives.
After the situation briefing, President Marcos Jr. led the ceremonial distribution of check assistance to several local chief executives.
