President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. issued several directives to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) regarding the construction and development of various ports in Region 10 during his inspection at the Port of Marawi in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.
In a media interview, the President emphasized the importance of ports in connecting the 18 municipalities surrounding Lake Lanao, making the Port of Marawi the first of several ports to be constructed in the Region.
“Dahil kagaya ng pagka-explain nga sa atin, pagka ito lang, walang connectivity, hindi magagamit dahil walang pupuntahan ‘yung barko. So, we will put others around the lake para maganda ‘yung connectivity natin,” he said.
According to PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago, funding for the construction of the Port of Marawi was sourced from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), which will transfer ownership once the appropriate recipient has been identified.
With a cost of PhP261.5 billion, the Port of Marawi features an 8,000 square meter backup area, a single-storey passenger terminal with 132 seats, a fish port, berthing for fast craft, and a Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ramp. Once operational, it is expected to boost regional trade and transportation.
