“Let us honor this day not just by remembering the sacrifices of our forefathers. We must live with the same courage and love of country; for freedom is not just something that we inherit but a right that we must protect every single day,” remarked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the 127th Anniversary of Philippine Independence at the Quirino Grandstand, City of Manila.
President Marcos Jr. paid tribute to heroes like Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini and Melchora Aquino, along with thousands of unnamed Filipinos who gave everything for the country’s freedom.
He noted that from the sacrifices of these patriots, the Philippine Republic gradually emerged. However, he also acknowledged that the nation faced immense challenges early in its history, such as world wars, oil crises and the forces of globalization. Through these trials, he emphasized that the Filipino spirit was forged in sacrifice and unity.
As the country now enjoys the right to speak freely and act without fear, the Chief Executive emphasized that true democracy thrives when opinions are welcomed and criticisms are seen as tools for progress.
“Sa Bagong Pilipinas, hindi kasalanan ang pagbibigay ng opinyon. At lalong hindi mali ang kritisismo. Bagkus, ito ang nagbibigay buhay at kinang sa ating demokrasya,” he conveyed.
Addressing government officials and public servants, the President stated that they are stewards of freedom who must not waste the trust given to them.
To the broader public, the President encouraged the continuous defense of the country’s independence. He reminded everyone that freedom is never simply handed down and can easily be lost, especially in today’s digital age where fake news, misinformation and herd mentality threaten the nation’s values and way of life.
He urged the people to seek the truth, resist lies and choose integrity even when no one is watching. He called on everyone to take a stand when mistakes are made and to pursue unity despite differences.
“Nasa ating kamay ang kapangyarihan na bumuo ng Bagong Pilipinas na maaari nating ipamana sa ating mga anak at sa kanilang mga anak,” President Marcos Jr. concluded in his message.
