President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. convened with several Cabinet members and key officials to address the impacts of Typhoons ‘Pepito,’ ‘Ofel’ and ‘Nika’ in a situation briefing at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
President Marcos Jr. emphasized the need for proactive measures, particularly in areas at risk of storm surges. He instructed local government units (LGUs) to prioritize preemptive evacuations and relocate residents to higher ground rather than distant areas — a strategy informed by lessons learned from Super Typhoon Yolanda.
The Chief Executive directed the immediate dissemination of storm warnings through national and local media platforms, urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
In line with this, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) temporarily halted all land travel bound for the Visayas and Mindanao via Matnog Port and other areas in the Bicol Region, aiming to prevent passengers and vehicles from becoming stranded in Maharlika Highway and other major roads.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) ensured that food and non-food resources were adequately stocked. Food packs are ready for distribution, with increased production at Luzon repacking centers to meet rising demand. The Agency also highlighted its logistical efforts, including the use of third-party delivery services to ensure timely distribution.
As preparations ramp up for Typhoon Pepito, the NDRRMC identified key humanitarian needs, including emergency shelter assistance, water sanitation, power restoration, medical services, school rehabilitation and livelihood support.
President Marcos Jr. reiterated the importance of swift and coordinated action, calling on local governments to open additional evacuation centers and utilize the brief window of calm between storms to bolster preparations.
