“I consider this event as a tremendous chance for exposure for the Philippines and a welcome boost to our efforts to show that we are one of the world’s leading tourist destinations,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed as he graced the opening ceremony of the 36th Joint Meeting of the United Nations (UN) Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific & the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia (CAP-CSA) at the Grand Ballroom of Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort in Lapu-Lapu City.

Aiming to foster sustainable and innovative tourism practices, the President expressed his gratitude to the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the UN Tourism Commissions for entrusting the Philippines with hosting the significant gathering.

He emphasized the event’s importance not only for shaping the future of tourism but also for showcasing the Philippines as a leading tourist destination.

The Chief Executive highlighted the crucial role of education and sustainability in tourism, advocating for investment in training and skills upgrading to ensure impactful experiences for tourists and stakeholders.

He underscored that the destruction of local culture and ecology must be avoided at all costs.

“We must go green in the transformation of our tourism products and services as a solution to address climate change, resource preservation and long-term industry sustainability,” the President stated.

He also discussed ongoing efforts with the private sector to enhance tourist experience in the Philippines, including easing visa access, improving water sanitation and healthcare facilities, and upgrading airports, all aimed at encouraging tourists to ‘visit, stay, spend and return.’

“Let us celebrate our own cultural diversity and wonders as we build a brighter, better and greener future for tourism here in Asia, the Pacific and the world,” President Marcos Jr. concluded in his speech.
