President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. presided over a sectoral meeting to discuss the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) flood management program at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañan Palace.

The DPWH reported the significant progress in the flood control budget from 2016 to 2024, covering 18 major river basins worth PhP164.98 billion (according to Fiscal Year [FY] 2016-2024 budget based on the General Appropriations Act [GAA]). Among the projects included in the budget are the integrated disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation measures in the low-lying areas of Pampanga Bay; flood risk management projects in Cagayan de Oro and Cagayan River; Pasig-Marikina river channel improvement project (Phase IV); and the Metro Manila flood management project (Phase I).

The Department also presented its master plan for flood management in Metro Manila and surrounding areas for 2011-2035, where a total of PhP104.2 billion worth of flood mitigation/intervention projects consistent with the said master plan have already been programmed since 2011 until 2024, representing 30% of the total estimated cost.

On its actual flood management program accomplishments for the period July 2022-March 2024, a total of 4,765 flood control projects have already been completed while 4,227 are still ongoing.
