The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and Department of Energy (DOE) officially cement a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on optimizing the use of renewable energy and improve its accessibility to the public, during a ceremony in Malacañang on December 7, 2023.

Signing the agreement are NIA Acting Administrator Engr. Eduardo Eddie Guillen and DOE Undersecretary Atty. Sharon Garin, witnessed by Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Hubert Dominic Guevara.

This partnership between the NIA and DOE is set to enhance the country-wide approach in developing the renewable energy resources in the Philippines, anchored in the Administration’s commitment to generate 35 percent of power from renewable sources by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

Under the agreement, the DOE will utilize the existing NIA irrigation facilities and the ongoing constructions, including areas identified and listed for future irrigation development projects “for public consumption” without compromising the operations of NIA.

This strategic initiative will help the NIA expand economically and generate additional funds for the operation and maintenance of its irrigation facilities. It will also enable the DOE to provide the public with better access to clean and reasonably priced energy.
