February 9, 2023
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo.
The President is conducting his inaugural Official Visit to Japan from 8-12 February 2023 upon the invitation of Prime Minister Kishida, whom he first met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America in September last year.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed matters of mutual concern that are anchored in reaffirming the vibrant ties between the Philippines and Japan.
In his statement, President Marcos Jr. pushed for a stronger partnership with Japan. He stated that he and the Japanese leader agreed to cooperate more closely in areas of shared priorities covering the economy, security and defense, maritime and safety, healthcare mechanisms, environmental commitments, people-to-people exchanges, culture, regional peace initiatives and nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, among others.
“Prime Minister Kishida and I just had a deeply engaging bilateral meeting covering the full range of Philippines-Japan bilateral relations. After our meeting, I can confidently say that our strategic partnership is stronger than ever as we navigate, together, the rough waters buffeting our region,” President Marcos Jr. said.
