President Ferdinand R. Marcos personally thanked the Ormocanons for their support after a landslide victory in the May 9 National and Local Elections as he graced the 75th Ormoc City Diamond Charter Day Celebration at the Ormoc City Superdome in Leyte.
“Karapat-dapat lang naman na — dahil nandito na nga tayo ay kailangan ko ipaabot ang aking napakalaking pasasalamat sa inyong lahat sa suportang ibinigay ninyo — sa suportang ibinigay ninyo sa akin sa nakaraang halalan at hindi ko po makakalimutan ‘yun,” the President said.
The Chief Executive, who visited Leyte to attend the switch-on lighting ceremony of San Juanico Bridge and 78th Leyte Gulf Landings, travelled by air to Ormoc City to celebrate its diamond jubilee founding anniversary, as well as inspect the Ormoc Airport.
“It is my pleasure to join you today as we observe the celebration of the 75th Adlaw sa Ormoc. This commemoration is a testament to the collective resilience and good character of the Ormocanons. Through your local history and shared experiences, you have assured us all that no matter how uncertain the future remains, we know that your strong sense of solidarity and cooperation will always lead us to greater feats. These are the characteristics of national unity — the national unity we spoke about for so many months — because it is what we badly need to heal our nation from political divide and diversity,” the President said as he recognized the long history of Ormoc City which dates back to October 20, 1947 – exactly three years after the famous Leyte Gulf Landings — when it was formally inaugurated by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 42 signed by President Manuel Roxas on September 4, 1947.
Closing his message, President Marcos called for unity in addressing the country’s vulnerability to climate change with Ormoc City having been battered by typhoons Yolanda and Odette. He also encouraged the Ormocanons to actively participate in the government’s enhanced PinasLakas vaccination campaign against COVID-19, which remains to be a constant threat amid the normalization initiatives to revive the country’s post-pandemic economy.
The highlights of the event included the launching and unveiling of a commemorative stamp issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation, as well as the signing of the first day cover to mark the momentous occasion.
