President Rodrigo Roa Duterte expressed his hope for the succeeding administration to continue pursuing and completing projects that will greatly benefit national athletes in the years to come, notably the Philippine Sports Training Center (PSTC) – the new training ground for Filipino athletes aspiring to achieve excellence in international sports competition.

President Duterte commended everyone involved in the project which will be the primary venue for the development of the national team pool members.

“I thank the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for giving me the honor to witness the beginning of such a momentous undertaking for Philippine sports,” the President keynoted in his remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony of the PSTC in Bagac, Bataan.

“I wish to recognize the contribution and generosity of the Bataan Provincial Government for donating 250[,000] square meters of land here in Bagac for the establishment of the PSTC,” he added, highlighting the need for collaboration, synergy and whole-of-government approach among the national government, local government and sports institutions in order to provide an inclusive and efficient services that the Filipino people deserve.

The PhP3.5 billion project will be built in the 250,000 square meters of land area donated by the Provincial Government of Bataan. It will feature numerous facilities for administrative, medical, sports science, and dormitories for athletes and coaches, and will cater to the needs of athletes competing in Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

The PSTC was created under Republic Act No. 11214 or the Philippine Sports Training Center Act which seeks to “promote and develop sports in the country, to achieve excellence in international sports competitions, to ensure success in the country’s quest to achieve competitiveness in the Olympic Games and to promote international amity among nations.”

“With this facility, I am confident we will raise and develop more world-class athletes who will represent the Philippines in international competitions and usher in a thriving sports industry here in the country,” the Chief Executive expressed.

After several months of weighing down options, Bataan was strategically chosen as the location for the sports complex, with its history of brave Filipino heroes laying down their lives for the country during World War II; and being mirrored with the sacrifices made by the athletes as modern-day heroes, according to PSC Chairperson Butch Ramirez.

Bataan is also known for its agricultural and aquatic resources which will significantly help the nutrition and training of the national team pool members.

The state-of-the-art sports hub is set to be completed by 2025.
