New International Maritime Organization (IMO), headed by its Secretary General Mr. Koji Sekimizu, called on President Benigno S. Aquino III to express support in the development of maritime industry in the Philippines.
In an interview, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said, they also discussed updates on the current status of almost 300 Filipino seafarers who were among the 1,000 crews of Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise ship that sank off Italy last January. Out of 291 cases filed at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), 281 are already settled, she said. Claims amounting to 2.488 million pesos in total have been received by the Filipino crews, while the remaining 10 has not yet received their claims.
Magsaysay Shipping Corporation is the manning agency of those ship workers.
