Old City, Jerusalem

The Western Wall, also known as the ‘Wailing Wall,’ is a western support wall of the Temple Mount and is considered as one of the most religious sites for the Jewish people all over the world.

Situated at the Old City in Jerusalem, the Wall draws thousands of people every year who carry their prayers that are either recited or written down on paper to be inserted between the cracks of the Wall.

According to tradition, the First Temple that was built by King Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians centuries after its establishment. After 70 years in exile, the Jews returned to Jerusalem and gathered to build the Second Temple. It stood at the top of the mountain until the Romans destroyed it later on. The Jewish community was exiled for a long period but never stopped mourning for Jerusalem.

The Western Wall, a remnant of the Temple, became a ‘symbol of yearning for Zion’ and the place where the Jewish pilgrims from all over the world come to pray and weep.
