PRRD’s Official Visit to Tokyo Japan
October 29-31, 2017
President Rodrigo Roa Dutere is set to embark on a two-day official visit to Tokyo, Japan on 30-31 October 2017.
The President is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe—who is fast becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan—to strengthen Philippine-Japan bilateral relations, as well as other matters of mutual interest to both countries.
He will also meet with high-ranking government officials and witness the signing of letters of intent (LOI) between the Philippine officials and Japanese businessmen.
The President will also confer a Gawad Sikatuna posthumous award on honorable Takeo Fukuda, the late Japanese Prime Minister, who pursued a program for universal peace and harmony by adopting and implementing the heart-to-heart policy, known as “Fukuda Doctrine.”
To cap off his visit, the President is expected to hold an audience with the His Majesty the Emperor Akihito in his royal residence, the Imperial Palace, in Tokyo.
His visit to Japan serves as his first official visit since the Marawi siege began in May 2017. The five-month long battle against the Pro-Islamic State militants finally reached its conclusion with the death of its extremist leaders, Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute, of which the President declared the liberation of Marawi on October 17, 2017. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenza soon announced the end of combat operation in Marawi City on October 23, 2017.
