Kampong Ayer or the Water Village is the largest and most famous water settlement in Southeast Asia. Dubbed by Antonio Pigafetta as the “Venice of the East”, it features the simple life of the Bruneian as stated in history and its role as the center of trade in Borneo.
The said village, built completely of pillar houses with wooden walkways, houses 42 villages with 30,000 residents.
People have lived in Kampong Ayer for over 1,300 years and have been part of the Brunei Sultanate’s capital.
