President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, together with his fellow leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), met with the representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) during the 30th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in Manila.
In his opening remarks, President Duterte emphasized the importance of AIPA in the community building process across the ASEAN region through their law-making functions and accelerating the ratification of ASEAN agreements.
“AIPA plays an integral role in ensuring that the regional agreements are carried out and implemented at a national level so that the benefits of integration are felt by our peoples in the region,” the President said.
Before the Leaders’ Summit, representatives of AIPA convened in a preparatory meeting spearheaded by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on April 28. According to the House Speaker, the ASEAN-AIPA interface remains important in achieving the ASEAN Community building process through peoples’ participation.
Likewise, AIPA’s interface with the ASEAN leaders focuses on its commitment to work for the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 in compliance with the three pillars — political-security, economics, and socio-cultural.
