President Rodrigo Roa Duterte personally inspected the Russian guided missile cruiser “Varyag” docked at Pier 15 in Port Area, Manila.

Upon his arrival, the President was accorded with foyer honors by the Russian Navy. Thereafter, he led the tour together with the rest of the reception party and assessed the following stations: 1st Station – Helicopter Deck with KA-27PS Helicopter; 2nd Station – Upper Deck (star board side) with short range anti-missile system; 3rd Station – Upper Deck (mid ship) with long range anti-aircraft missile system; 4th Station – bow of the ship with anti-ship missile system and anti-aircraft carrier; 5th Station – Museum; and 6th Station – Bridge.

“Varyag” is the flagship vessel of the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet. The four-day visit in Manila marks the second port call of the Russian Navy in the country, as part of the goodwill visit meant to boost relations between the Philippines and Russia. The first visit took place in January, when anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs and sea-tanker Boris Butoma arrived in the country.

Present during the event were National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Russian Federation Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev, and Commanding Officer Captain Alexsei Ulyanenko.
